Charleston’s newest Mexican restaurant and tequila bar, the Matador, opened in Downtown Charleston on May 25, 2023, and it already has a 4.5 star rating on Google. Charleston marks the tenth location for the tried-and-true concept, which originally started in Seattle in 2004. Expect mouth-watering Mexican dishes, a wide variety of top-shelf tequila, and an emphasis on happy hour, including late-night specials starting at 10:00pm. Charleston Guru stopped by to get a look inside.
The Interior
The Matador has a large bar with seating facing out to Meeting Street and two spacious dining rooms that are perfect for larger groups. The low-lit space has an old-world-meets-new-world ambiance with rustic tones, artistic decor, and Spanish flare. In the months to come, Matador is opening an upstairs mezal bar, the Mezcaleria. The Mezcaleria will have a bar created from reclaimed wood and a spacious outdoor patio for guests to enjoy.
The Exterior
The Matador is located on Meeting Street across from FIG and The Ryder Hotel. Like its other locations, the restaurant is in a convenient, walkable area of the city.
The Menu
The menu at Matador includes burritos, enchiladas, chile rellenos, fajitas, tacos, and the popular Matador Bowl, which is served with rice, black beans, pickled onions, serrano slaw, and your choice of protein. The menu also includes specialty margaritas with your choice of tequila. Pictured here are the Blackberry-Habanero, Passionfruit, and Smokey margaritas.
One of the highlights at Matador is their renowned happy hour. Happy hour is offered twice daily from 4:00pm to 6:00pm and 10:00pm to last call. Happy hour includes $6 to $7 tacos, quesadillas, guacamole, bean dip, Brussels sprouts, and nachos.
