A Look Inside: Coterie

March 5, 2024

Step into the world of Coterie, a vibrant restaurant and bar in Downtown Charleston’s Upper King area. Founded by Jeremy Buck, restaurateur/craft cocktail specialist, and his wife, Jital Vaghela, an international apparel design consultant. They opened the doors of Coterie, Downtown Charleston, in 2020, focusing on experience, community, and hospitality. Coterie spotlights the art of elevated libations and beautifully curated Modern American fare by Executive Chef Damian Sandoval in an artisanal space. Expect flavor-packed dishes, plus an incredible selection of cocktails and beverages. Take a Look Inside!

The Interior

The interior has a cozy bar, numerous tables, and a beautiful mural showing the colliding of cultures to create the Coterie menu. Artist Amrisa Niranjan created the mural, which is the restaurant’s focal point. Sculpted okra flowers, a notable vegetable used in both Gullah and global recipes, are featured throughout the space.

The Exterior

The dog-friendly patio contains ample seating, a full bar, and lush greenery. Happy hour is offered daily at the bar from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Happy hour includes $9 cocktails, $9 glasses of wine, and select $6 to $10 menu items like the tasty Pork Belly Bao Buns.

The outdoor and indoor dining area is also transformed into Coterie’s sister company, Idle Hands Coffee House, during the day between 8:00am and 3:00pm Monday through Friday and 8:30am to 3:00pm Saturday and Sunday.

The Menu

Coterie’s menu is full of rich, satisfying dishes. A must-try is the Trinidad Doubles, which can be ordered with chana (chickpeas), served on a fried barra with chile arbol sauce and tamarind chutney. The menu also includes items like The Pho Steak with Kimchi Mashed Potatoes and the Chicken Tinga on Huarache topped with smoked feta, crispy rice noodles, and pickled fresnos.

Coterie also has an impressive cocktail menu featuring cocktails like the Chai No Lait, made with masala chai infused beefeater gin, nigori sake, lemon, demerara, egg white, and bitters.
