A Look Inside: Southbound

November 8, 2023

Southbound opened in February 2023, and has quickly become one of the top restaurants in Downtown Charleston. Southbound provides a daily changing menu and a live-fire-grill dining experience for guests. This charming restaurant is a must-try date night spot in Charleston. Take a look inside this beautiful restaurant created by the Free Reign Restaurants.

The Interior

Inside Southbound, there are multiple dining spaces to choose from.

When guests make a reservation, they can choose to sit downstairs at a table in the intimate dining room that has a view of the kitchen, or at the chef’s counter to watch the chefs assemble the dishes and utilize the live-fire grill.

Guests can also make a reservation to sit upstairs at a high-top table near the bar, in the dining room, or on the upstairs balcony. Lastly, guests can dine outside on a charming porch swing, the large outdoor terrace, or the wrap-around covered porch.

You can’t go wrong. Every dining area in Southbound has a unique atmosphere with charm and character.

The Exterior

The two-story building that houses Southbound is situated in the Cannonborough/Elliotborough neighborhood. This home has a rich history, and in 2010, it unfortunately burned down, so the live-fire cooking focus at Southbound keeps the history alive in this renovated home.

The exterior of the home features three beautiful outdoor dining options, including the unique seating option of a cozy porch swing that overlooks Cannon Street. See photos of the outdoor terrace, outdoor patio, and porch swings below.

The Menu

The menu at Southbound is ever-changing but always consists of live-fire grilled meat and seafood, specialty cocktails, house-made desserts, and elevated side dishes. Guru Tip: Southbound does share their daily menu at 3:00pm each day on Instagram.

However, one menu item that remains consistent is the popular Dry Aged Steak Tartare. The dish is garnished with hand-crafted fingerling potato chips, aged gouda, and cornichon (pickled cucumbers).

Sample Menu

A crowd favorite cocktail is the Sage Advice, which is a gin martini served with one large cube, Kakira Gin, Dolin Genepy, Dolin Dry Vermouth, Muddled Sage, Peychaud’s Bitters, and garnished with a sage leaf. The cocktail is refreshing and light.
