A Look Inside: Taverna

January 26, 2024

Taverna Philosophia opened on Thursday, January 18, 2024, in Mount Pleasant, SC. Taverna is a beautiful, elevated, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant owned and operated by owners Dimitri Hatgidimitriou and Chef Justin Hunt. Taverna Philosophia and Philosophia, Justin and Dimitri’s first restaurant, have filled a gap for an elevated sit-down Mediterranean restaurant in Mount Pleasant. Take a look inside Taverna.

The Interior

Taverna has an organic yet elegant design that was created by co-owners Justin and Dimitri. The restaurant’s interior is adorned with beautiful brick arches, over 900 clay pots imported from Greece, and single-origin olive oil on each table. The spacious layout and natural light flooding in through the windows add to the warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The Menu

The menu at Taverna includes a wide selection of items from their raw bar, including oysters, clams, and salmon tartare. Appetizers include escargot and seared scallops served with whipped feta. Taverna’s menu includes a Giortí section, meaning “Feast.” The menu items under the Feast section include proteins that are cooked whole or on the bone to ensure the most flavor is present in each dish. During our interview, owner and chef, Jason said he is probably most proud of the braised Pork Shank and the whole Guinea Hen marinated in the brine from feta cheese prior to cooking.

Taverna’s beverage program includes a variety of Greek wines and specialty cocktails, including the Mykonos Martini, which is crafted with Beefeater, Mastiha, Carpano Bianco, lemon expression, and Ouzo 12 Rinse.
